The business correspondence varies from solicitations for donations from various local charities, invitations to events, discussions of legal, taxation and real estate issues to the discussion of rental properties and financial matters. Notable correspondence received during this period from James B. Angell (President, University of Michigan), Charles W. Eliot (President, Harvard College), William Goodwin (Harvard Professor of Greek), Joseph H. Choate (Ambassador to Great Britain), William Lawrence (Bishop of Massachusetts), and Royal C. Taft (Governor of Rhode Island). Letters from correspondents which appear only once in the collection are contained in folders 134-136, arranged by date. Folder 138 contains miscellaneous material such as invitations, reports, and programs. Merchant bills and receipts comprise the second series of materials in the collection and are revealing as examples of both Choate's daily consumer life and of Boston cultural history during this period. The receipts reflect widely Choate's expenses for everything from stock purchases to household goods to livery service around town. The bills and receipts provide the researcher with the precise cost of merchandise and the types and amounts of purchases made by a prominent family during this period. A line describing the types of merchandise purchased or services rendered is provided for each item on the box list.
