This lecture explores the history of Waddesdon Manor, a property now owned by Britain's National Trust, with particular emphasis on Waddesdon's founder, Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, and his outstanding collection of fine and decorative arts. Magnificent English paintings, including portraits by Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Romney, combined with unsurpassed collections of 18th century French furniture and European decorative arts produced a distinctive style known as le goût Rothschild. This opulent style influenced the formation of many other collections, including those of the American titans of the late nineteenth century.
