Gallery Talk at the Boston Public Library
Saturday, September 19, 2009, 10:00 a.m.
James Reid-Cunningham, Chief Conservator, The Boston Athenæum
The Designer Bookbinders-one of the foremost societies devoted to the craft of fine bookbinding-recently sponsored a competition entered by hundreds of binders from 29 countries. The binders were tasked with creating an interpretive binding on the same text, a limited edition from the Incline Press entitled Water-a letterpress-printed volume with twenty-nine poems in ten different languages, illustrated with fourteen original prints. An exhibition featuring 100 short-listed submissions, including a binding created by the Boston Athenaeum's Chief Conservator James Reid-Cunningham, will be on display at the Boston Public Library September to December, 2009. This exhibition is an exploration of the craft of the hand-bound book, and to see creative and diverse examples of contemporary artistic book-bindings.
Please meet at the McKim entrance of the Boston Public Library.
To Reserve: There will be no fee for this event. Reservations are required but will not be accepted until September 8. Please call the Athenæum's reservation line, 617-720-7600.
