Classics

The Ancient Greco-Roman Classical Literature Reading Group ("Classics") will meet the 1st Wednesday of every month from 6:00-7:30pm, with the exception of the first meeting on September 8, 2010.

Our group will focus on Greek and Roman Literature in Translation and the Classical Tradition. Greco-Roman Literature encompasses epic poetry, love elegiacs, odes,  dramatic works, historical narratives, etc. Since there is much to cover and so many avenues to pursue, it would be best to begin at the beginning--Homer and Hesiod. In later months, we might read some current fiction that touches on the ancient themes we've been studying.

2011-2012

September 7: We will be reading from Greek lyric poets, e.g. Sappho, Archilochus, Alcaeus, etc. We recommend the following anthology: Greek Lyric Poetry, translated by M.L. West.

October 5: Aeschylus, Persians

November 2: Sophocles, Electra

December 7: Euripides, Medea

This way, we shall read in chronological order, so everyone can see
how Greek Literature develops and changes between 600 and 400 BCE.

For January 4th, we'll read the Loeb Classical Library's edition of
Aristotle's Poetics, which also includes Longinus' essay On the
Sublime, as well as excellent introductions by modern scholars on the
Greeks' ideals and criticism of art.

February 1, March 7 & April 4, 2012, we shall return to Homer by discussing The
Odyssey
(we already discussed the Iliad this past year).

May 2:  Z. Mason, The Lost Books of the Odyssey

June 6: Margaret Atwood, The Penelopiad
