Lecture, Carol Wallace, Leaving Van Gogh: A Novel

Thursday, April 28, 2011 - 6:00pm - 7:00pm
This event is open to the public.

Leaving Van Gogh: A Novel Image courtesy of Spiegel and Grau.

Leaving Van Gogh is the story of Vincent Van Gogh’s last two months, narrated by Dr. Gachet, a physician who had trained in “mental medicine” in Paris in the 1850s. As the two become friends, Dr. Gachet is forced to explore the relationship between genius and madness, and a doctor’s responsibility toward his family, his friends, and his patients.

Carol Wallace, who is the author of 20 books, earned a master’s degree in art history from Columbia University in 2006. Her thesis is the inspiration for Leaving Van Gogh. Ms. Wallace has lectured at the Smithsonian Institution, the Huntington Library, and the Costume Institute of New York’s Metropolitan Museum, among other venues.

To Reserve: This event is open to the public. The fee is $10 for members, and $15 for non-members. Reservations are required but cannot be accepted until Wednesday, April 13. Please call the Athenæum’s events reservation line, (617) 720-7600.
