Athenaeum members who are already Proust enthusiasts and those who are aficionados-in-the-making are invited to join a discussion group devoted to the author and his work.
The Group meets on the last Tuesday of the month from 12:00 noon until 1:30 pm and will return from its summer break to begin the Autumn semester on September 23rd. The Group will read approximately one hundred pages per month. Please click here for the reading schedule.
The discussion group will be led by Proust scholar Dr. Hollie Markland Harder, who is the director of language programs (in French, Spanish, and Italian), and a lecturer in the humanities at Brandeis University. Her work on Proust includes articles on Françoise’s cooking (“Proust’s Novel Confections: Françoise’s Cooking and Marcel’s Book,” which appeared in Modern Language Studies) and the function of humor in Proust’s novel (“Proust’s Human Comedy,” published in The Cambridge Companion to Proust).
Members are encouraged to use the Moncrieff/Kilmartin Vintage three-volume paperback edition of the novel, but are welcome to use other translations. The differences in translation will be discussed.
Participants must sign up in advance for the complete semester. There will be a fee of $30—which also includes membership in the Boston Chapter of the Proust Society of America. The group is limited to 20 participants. Anyone interested should contact Monica Higgins at 617.720.7667.
Please check back to see where we are with our reading for the September 25th meeting.
