Asylum Quartet
A concert of four saxophones
Originally conceived a hybrid of the woodwind and brass instrument families, the saxophone is a musical chameleon. In this encore performance at the Boston Athenæum, the Asylum Quartet uses four saxophones evoke the sounds of other instruments. From Antonin Dvorak’s sweeping “American” string quartet to Claude Debussy’s playful piano piece Children’s Cornerand Gyorgy Ligeti’s spirited Six Bagatellesoriginally for wind quintet, this concert promises to delight and inspire.

Lauded for “nonstop virtuoso skills” (Times Herald-Record, New York)and "evocative, educational, and refreshing" concerts (Newport Daily News, Rhode Island),the Asylum Quartet’s repertoire spans traditional, contemporary and globally-minded works. The four saxophonists met in 2011 as graduate students at the The Hartt School in West Hartford, Connecticut, and adopted their name from Asylum Hill, the storied Hartford neighborhood. The quartet serves as Ensemble-in-Residence at Hartford’s Christ Church Cathedral and partners with Hartford Performs and Arts for Learning Connecticut to provide educational music programming to students in Hartford and beyond.
