Join us to explore the overlapping worlds of nineteenth century writers and artists in the special exhibition Henry James and American Painting at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Casey Riley, assistant curator at the Boston Athenaeum and a co-curator of the show, will lead us in a tour of the exhibition from the Hostetter Gallery in museum’s new wing to the Vatichino gallery in the historic palace. Our day will also include a guided tour of the American Wing at the Museum of Fine Arts and lunch at Café G at the Gardner Museum.

Henry James and American Painting

The novels of Henry James paint a vivid tableau of American expatriate social and artistic life at the turn of the last century. This exhibition, the first to explore in depth the intersection between James’s friendships with American artists and his writing, brings together nearly fifty works, including paintings on loan from museums across the United States and Great Britain, as well as a selection of photographs, manuscripts, letters and printed books from the Morgan Library and Museum in New York, where the exhibition originated, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s own art and archival collection.
These works illuminate the creative exchanges that took place in artists’ studios and grand salon—in Boston, Florence, London, Venice, and elsewhere—between James, Gardner, and other luminaries in their overlapping circles, including John La Farge, John Singer Sargent, James McNeill Whistler. The work of several female artists in these same circles, including the painters Elizabeth Boott Duveneck and Lilla Cabot Perry, speak to the complex roles of women in society at the time as eloquently as the words penned by James about his memorable female protagonists.
Casey Riley, PhD, is assistant curator at the Boston Athenaeum, where she is involved in the research and development of projects spanning the breadth of the library's remarkable collections. She has organized a number of collections-based exhibitions at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and is co-curator of the exhibition Henry James and American Painting organized in conjunction with The Morgan Library and Museum. She is a co-author of the Gardner Museum's forthcoming guidebook (Yale University Press, 2018) and a contributor to Elizabeth Edwards and Christopher Morton's edited collection, Photographs, Museums, Collections: Between Art and Information (Bloomsbury, 2015). A specialist in the history of photography as well as the visual and material culture of the long nineteenth century, Riley holds a PhD in American studies from Boston University, an MA in English from Middlebury College, an MAT from Brown University, and a BA in the history of art from Yale University.
