Member’s Choice: Great Caesar

Robert Strassler

Independent scholar and businessman Robert Strassler is the editor of the Landmark series of ancient historians. Five works have been published, which are widely acclaimed for making ancient Greek historians and the Commentaries of Julius Caesar accessible to modern readers through careful and thorough annotation and an imaginative format which includes, among other things, clear illustrative maps. Join him for a presentation on The Landmark Julius Caesar: The Complete Works. Strassler will discuss the historical Caesar compared to the Caesar most Americans know, that is, the Caesar of Shakespeare’s play.  And he will demonstrate how truly outstanding Caesar was, from his extraordinary military skills to his powers as a writer, politician, and mathematician.

Robert Strassler is an independent scholar, businessman, and editor of the Landmark series of ancient historians. Three additional works in the Landmark series are under contract and underway. Strassler is a graduate of Harvard University and its business school, and serves and has served on numerous boards.  At this time he is a General Partner of Weston Associates in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Medici Archive Project, former chair of the Aston Magna Foundation for Music and the Humanities, Inc., Chair Emeritus of the Board of Overseers of Bard College at Simon’s Rock, and an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees for The National Humanities Center. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society, an overseer of the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston, and a member of the Advisory Council to the Department of Astrophysics at Princeton University.
