Up Close Tour: Too Much Nakedness: The Boston Athenaeum and the Rise of American Sculpture

Up Close Tours encourage visitors to look closely at materials from the Athenæum’s rich collections and consider them within a particular context.

Join Boston Athenæum Docent Carolyn Hilles-Pilant for a discussion of and close look at works of nineteenth-century American sculptors Thomas Crawford, Horatio Greenough, and William Wetmore Story. Discover the Athenæum’s role in creating an audience for some of the United States’ first sculptors, who learned anatomy not just from classical statuary, but also from dissection and from live nude models, when they trained in Italy.

Assistive Listening Devices image

Most programs held in the Bayard Henry Long Room on the Athenaeum's first floor are amplified and assistive listening devices are available for patron use.
