Virtual Event: Curator's Choice: Edmonia Lewis

Join Polly Thayer Starr Fellow in American Art and Culture Theo Tyson as she presents the Athenaeum's carte de visite of famed sculptor, Edmonia Lewis. Edmonia Lewis was the first woman of color to achieve international fame and recognition as a sculptor in the fine arts world. Of African American and Native American heritage, her neoclassical works - including a marble bust of the martyred Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, hero of the first all African American 54th Massachusetts Regiment - won her acclaim and accolades but did not allow her absolution from racism and gender discrimination. Tyson will take a closer look at how Lewis used photography as agency to advance her career, anti-slavery activism, and the abolitionist movement.
