Virtual Event: Curator's Choice: Little Nell

In this presentation, Assistant Curator Christina Michelon will take a closer look at a familiar sculpture in the Athenaeum's collection: Little Nell (c. 1851) by Robert Ball Hughes. The sculpture depicts the protagonist of Charles Dickens's The Old Curiosity Shop at a pivotal moment in the story as she seeks solace while reading. Dr. Michelon will demonstrate the connections between Dickens's wildly popular tale and Hughes's representation of its heroine. Little Nell shows us that reading -- not just books, but also art and "old and curious things" -- serves as a necessary respite.

This event is part of our four-part series, "Curator's Choice." Join an Athenæum curator for a casual conversation about their current projects and the special collections items that inspire them, spark their curiousity, and generate discussion.
