Virtual Event: Curator's Choice: The White Curtains

with Ginny Badgett

"Letting people have your paintings is like letting them wear your clothes,” modernist artist Florine Stettheimer (1875-1944) once opined. To Stettheimer, her art was intensely personal and intimate. Stettheimer’s floral still life The White Curtains from about 1915 entered the Boston Athenæum’s collection in 1954, a gift from her younger sister Ettie to safeguard Stettheimer’s legacy posthumously. Join Assistant Curator Ginny Badgett as she examines the intersections between Stettheimer’s biography, personal life, and The White Curtains, which once included a portrait, painted over by Stettheimer shortly after the painting’s original unveiling.
This event is part of our four-part series, "Curator's Choice." Join an Athenæum curator for a casual conversation about their current projects and the special collections items that inspire them, spark their curiousity, and generate discussion.
