Curator's Choice: Fashioning the Collection
with Theo Tyson
Join Polly Thayer Starr Fellow in American Art and Culture Theo Tyson for a sartorial perspective on the Athenaeum's special collections. Employing an inventory of fashion plates and magazines to anchor the conversation, she’ll use the language of fashion to read paintings by Boston-based artists Allan Rohan Crite, Bradley Phillips, and Polly Thayer Starr. Tyson will engage color theories, visual and critical thinking strategies, and identity politics to evaluate the practice and importance of how artists use clothing and dress as a storytelling practice across generations, genres, and genders.
Theo Tyson is a curator and avant-garde academic. Her research is firmly rooted in historical and contemporary photography and the performativity of fashioning an identity. She uses fashion, art, and sociology to marry visual and material culture as an accessible, universal language to offer sartorial narratives that provide unique points of entry for civil discourse. Having worked previously with SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film and Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, Tyson is currently the Polly Thayer Starr Fellow in American Art and Culture at the Boston Athenæum. @ms_theotyson | theotyson.com
