WALKING TOUR: Once Upon a Neighborhood: A South End Walking Tour

with Alison Barnett

Today Boston is known for our many hospitals, but did you know Children’s Hospital, St. Elizabeth’s, and New England Deaconess all started in the same area of the South End, near Boston City Hospital (today, Boston Medical Center)? Join Athenaeum member and author Alison Barnet, for a walking tour that will take visitors on a rich journey into the histories of several hospitals in the South End. Participants will visit several historic site locations including Plymouth Hospital, the Female Medical Hospital, and the Free Hospital for Women, as well as the Franklin Square House, whose façade was used as “St. Eligius Hospital” on the TV series St. Elsewhere. Join other BA members and visitors to discover the Boston history just outside our doors. Participation is limited to 20.

Registrants should come prepared wearing comfortable shoes as this tour will last about 90 minutes.

Participants are asked to please meet at Boston Medical Center green on Harrison Ave, across from Worcester Square.
