IN PERSON POP-UP: Blooming Best Wishes for Joyce’s Ulysses
James Joyce’s Ulysses turns 100 this year. The torturous story of its publication and subsequent banning seem almost as complicated as the text itself has seemed to generations of students. The Athenaeum’s holdings include a rare second edition dated October 1922, the same year Sylvia Beach’s Shakespeare and Company in Paris published the infamous first edition.
Joyce’s novel follows Leopold Bloom in Dublin over the course of one day, June 16, and now every year fans the world over celebrate Bloomsday. To commemorate this centennial, drop by the Vershbow Special Collections Reading Room (second floor) to view the 1922 edition along with other books.
