Commercial products, such as these cards, were widely sold to legitimize the suffragist cause and raise money. Pro-suffrage organizations used everyday objects and nonthreatening advertising to neutralize anxieties about the effect women’s enfranchisement might have on traditional family values. But for some anti-suffragists, the link between playing cards and gambling validated the notion that suffrage was a “menace to social reform” and only sought by those of ill repute with uncivilized intentions.
