The Boston Athenæum is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax-exempt organization (tax ID number 04-2104852).

Tribute Gifts

Memorial and Tribute Gifts are a powerful way to honor or remember someone special in your life. To direct family and friends to make gifts to the Boston Athenæum in lieu of flowers, the following is suggested wording for an obituary or other tribute:

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Boston Athenæum's Annual Fund in memory of {deceased name}.  Checks may be mailed to the Boston Athenæum, 10½ Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108. Online gifts are accepted at

When a gift is made in honor or memory, a letter is sent to that person or his/her family.  In addition, the donors and honoree of a Tribute gift are recognized in the Athenæum's annual report, unless otherwise noted.

Matching Gifts

Many companies offer employee giving programs and will match your gift to a charitable organization, like the Boston Athenæum. A matching gift is a great opportunity to increase your donation. Most companies will match contributions dollar for dollar, and some will even double or triple the amount of your gift.

SEARCH the directory to find your company. If you do not see your employer listed, contact your human resources department to find out if your company offers a matching gift program as a benefit.

Donor Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a type of giving program, administered by a third party public charity (such as Fidelity Charitable or Schwab Charitable) , that allows you to combine tax benefits with the flexibility to recommend the amount and frequency of gifts to your favorite non-profit like the Boston Athenaeum. DAFs are created for the purpose of managing charitable donations on behalf of an organization, family, or individual. An increasingly popular charitable vehicle, DAFs are an excellent way to both simplify your charitable giving and facilitate your strategic philanthropic goals. DAFs allow donors to give cash, stock, and other assets—with the donor receiving an immediate tax deduction at the time of contribution is made, but can grant specified amounts to the charities of their choice at a later time.

Gifts of Personal Property

Gifts of personal property, including works of art, rare books, and other items of demonstrable value may be accepted. Please contact the Development Office for more information.

Endowment Gifts

Endowment gifts are especially appreciated as the interest generated from endowed funds continues to provide income for the program(s) toward which they are directed in perpetuity. A minimum of $25,000 is needed to create a fully endowed fund; however, the endowment can be built over a period of time.

Planned Gifts

Planned gifts, such as bequests, charitable gift annuities, and charitable trusts, are great ways to plan for your future and the Athenæum's. Visit our planned giving site to learn more about how you can include the Athenæum in your financial and estate plans, or contact the Development Office.
